Correction! Comic books that are worth more than just reading.

Comic books have been around since The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck was released in 1837. However, the Golden Age of Comics started in 1938 when Action Comics #1 introduced Superman. Some other superheroes created at that time were Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America. The Golden Age of comics ended around 1950.

These comics have been read a million times, and movies are made on them, so why are they still worth more than just reading?

Golden Age comic books from the past that are still in mint condition are quite valuable to collectors today. Over $3 million worth of comic books have been bought and sold since 2001, with over $1 billion changing hands. So when it comes to investing in comic books, the Golden Age, Silver Age, and Frank Miller's artwork are most likely to yield the highest returns.

Why should you invest in comic books when there are so many sources of alternate investment?

  • This alternative asset is not connected to traditional investment factors. Hence it's a great way to diversify.
  • It's a fun way to diversify your portfolio.
  • You can gain high returns if you choose the right comic books.
  • Comic books are tangible items that can stay well for a long time if taken care of.

What to consider when investing in comic books?

Knowing what makes a comic book worthwhile is essential when looking for the best comic books to invest in. In general, buying comics released before 1985 is your best bet. However, it's also important to remember that specific comic book pages and artwork associated with comic books might also offer you a profitable return on your investment.

First, issues are generally regarded as more desirable and more likely to provide a return. Issues that feature a change in writer or artist or that mark a significant story arc may become more valuable over time.

  • The popularity of the writer or artist - If a writer or artist is famous, the comic books containing their artwork can be useful. For example, Neil Gaiman's rising star has boosted the value of the Sandman comic books he created.
  • Rarity - The rarity of the comic book is one of the purposes why older comics are more valuable. They are becoming scarce. Because more latest comic books, particularly those from the modern world, are more likely to be saved, they are less rare and may be less valuable.
  • Condition of the comic book - The state of the comic strip is essential. A good-condition comic book is more valuable than a bad-condition comic book (for obvious reasons).

Here are some options for reselling your comic books in person and online. Here are some ideas for selling your comic books:

  • eBay - eBay is a good option if you have an extensive selection of comic books that aren't especially valuable or if you have single issues that aren't in mint condition or are very popular.
  • Heritage Auctions - Heritage Auctions is a popular place to sell more valuable comic books. This could be a good option if you have Golden or Silver Age comics. Please educate yourself about the actual grade and the book's worth before visiting a site like this.

Cons of investing in comic books

  • Since the value of comic books is subjective, it is determined by demand.
  • Since more individuals are saving comic books, making money with newer reissues is more challenging.
  • Purchasing high-value comic books can be costly, and the returns may be more difficult to realize.
